The corner of Broadway and Franklin Street marks what was then the summit of the Kalchook Hill. The slope is still perceptible. The speculations that swept away all that was left of the once great Dolph family estate in the panic of 1873 were conducted in an office on William Street, near where the Cotton Exchange now stands.
