There can be no question as to the value for technical training, of a good system of Apprenticeship/1) but at the same time no one denies the grievous defects of the present system, both as regards the provisions of the Law, and the customary manner of carrying them out, not to say of neglecting them altogether. Yet this subject does not seem to have received its fair share of the attention bestowed of late on educational matters, and there is still an opening for those who can favour us with practical suggestions on the following and other similar points :— a. Antiquated and anomalous condition of many laws and enactments relating to Apprenticeship, framed in industrial and social times essentially differing from our own. b. Grounds for dissatisfaction on the part of the Master. c. More frequent causes for legitimate complaint on the part of the Apprentice and his friends. I have reason to believe that the latter category of grievances are frequent items among the cases brought before the Justices of the Peace, and to these therefore (1) " I have the strongest feeling against any attempt to substitute collegiate teaching for practical apprenticeship."—Prof. Flf.eming Jenkin at the Meeting of the British Association in August 1871. we might look for much valuable information in this matter. It appears that the chief causes of dissatisfaction and dispute are :—a. That there is not any suitable criterion by which persons, and especially poor and illiterate persons desirous of apprenticing a lad, can safely judge of the abilities and trustworthiness of the Master to whom they think of confiding- him. I wish to lay particular stress on this point, because the proposed system will be found to provide a remedy. b. That the Master seeks too... --This text refers to the Paperback edition.
