IN RED MANS LAND A Study of The American Indian BY FRANCIS E. LEUPP. 1914. AUTHORS PREFACE IN the pages which follow I have tried to avoid going over any of the ground covered by The Indian and His Problem The purpose of that work was to set forth the larger relations of the aboriginal race to our governmental mechanism, and to indicate the lines of legislation and administration necessary to their proper adjustment. In In Red Mans Land my aim has been to deal with the In dian as an individual, as if I were introducing an old resident to new neighbors. As the two books present respectively the civic and the human aspects of the Indian, they are designed to supplement each other wherever they appeal to the same readers. The gen erous reception accorded my earlier volume encour ages me to hope for equal consideration for its successor. F. E, L. WASHINGTON, D. C., CONTENTS I. THE ABORIGINAL RED MAN . . ,. 15 II.
