" We met, and walked a little space, and now I see thee lying in thy lowly rest,— Pale silent lips, closed eyes, and darkened brow : And I am dumb, for surely God knows best. "The flowers are coming forth to welcome spring, The singing time of birds is now at hand : A tender memory to us they bring, For thou art gone into the Silent Land. " And we shall miss thy voice along the way ; So much less music on our ears will fall; The great world rushes on from day to day : One singing heart is silent—that is all. " The song is hushed that was so well begun, To add a name to unfulfilled renown ; And now we come with tears, when day is done, To leave on thy dead brow the poet's crown." PERSONAL APPEARANCE AND CHARACTER. In stature Samuel Smiles Jerdan was tall, although, during the last years of his life a slight stoop made him appear somewhat less so than he really was. His personal appearance and bearing were prepossessing. He inherited the likeness of his mother. His complexion was fair and ruddy, his features good, and the expression of his countenance pleasing. The photograph prefixed to this volume was executed about four years previous to his death, when he was twenty-seven years of age, and is an excellent likeness. It would be difficult for the writer of this sketch to speak at length about his character. But the less need be said here, seeing that its prominent features are exhibited to a large degree in the simple enumeration of his literary remains.
