By the first king of the Babylonian Empire, Hammurabi, known for the set of laws called Hammurabi's Code, one of the first written codes of law in recorded history. The recordings were created about 1760 B.C. The seven foot, four inch tall diorite stele was found by French archeologists in 1901-1902; it appears to be the most ancient memorial of legislation. The text consists of three parts: prologue, 282 articles of law, and epilogue. They present high degree of the development of class and social differentiation. The articles are classified: on legal action, property, service, marriage and family and liability.
