A 1905 novel by Charles Waddell Chesnutt (1858 –1932), an African American lawyer, author, essayist and political activist, best known for his novels and short stories exploring complex issues of racial and social identity. The book focuses on racial problems in the postwar South and tested out a number of possible social, economic, and political solutions.
