Reverend Egerton Ryerson Young (1840-1909) was a teacher, Methodist missionary and author. He was born in Crosby Township, Upper Canada. In 1861, Young became in charge of the school at Madoc, but he soon found the heavy responsibility and hard work disillusioning. In 1863 he was received on probation in the Wesleyan Methodist Church. In Hamilton, he was called to the pastorate of the First Methodist Church. He then was invited by his superiors to become a missionary to the natives of Rupert's Land. In 1890 appeared some of his books based on his mission experience including By Canoe and Dog-Train, which went through numerous editions. Among his other works are: Stories from Indian Wigwams and Northern Camp-Fires (1893), Oowikapun (1895), Life Among the Red Men of America (1895), Three Boys in the Wild North Land (1896), On the Indian Trail (1897) and Winter Adventures of Three Boys (1899). --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.
