Adventures of a Roman Nobleman in the Days of the Empire. By an American author and poet Edward Lucas White (1866 –1934).” When I look back on the beginning of my adventures, I can set the very day and hour when the tranquil course of my early life came to an end, when the comfortable commonplaces of my previous existence altered, when the placid current of my former life broke suddenly and without warning into the tumultuous rapids which hurried me from surprise to surprise and from peril to peril”.
fantastics and other fancies
- Author: Hearn Lafcadio
- Genre: Criticism & Theory
A posthumous collection of 36 early works by Patrick Lafcadio Hearn, also known as Koizumi Yakumo European-born American-Japanese author, orientalist and philosopher, who wrote novels and articles with exotic themes in highly precise and polished prose. Lyrical and passionate, these brief romantic sketches can be regarded as prose poems. The “Fantastics” proper and the “Other fancies” have been grouped indiscriminately in chronological order, though differing greatly in spirit and in excellence of style. But it is not alone the charm that clings about all that is weird and fanciful that gives value to this early work of Hearn’s. It sheds rich light upon one phase of his development and forms an essential part of his biography; and it helps to furnish proof, along with much else of varying form and excellence that he put forth a vast deal of literary effort in the years of his stay in New Orleans…

H. Crouch Batcelor’s lecture concerning the authorship of Shakespeare’s works. In introduction the author notifies: I intend, in the following pages, to incorporate the text of that lecture, but to considerably amplify it, and I undertake that not one objection which has been raised within my knowledge shall be evaded or left unanswered. Hebraic Literature; Translations from the Talmud, Midrashim and
- Author: Various
- Genre: Criticism & Theory
To the world at large it has great value archaeologically. Here are preserved ancient laws, glint lights on past history, forgotten forms in the classic tongues, and pictures of old civilization. No one criticism can cover the whole work. It is so many-sided. It includes so many different standards of worth and value. If we take it as a whole, it is good, it is bad and indifferent; it is trash and it is treasure; it is dust and it is diamonds; it is potsherd and it is pearls; and in the hands of impartial scholars, it is one of the great monuments of mental achievement, one of the world's wonders.
