Fletcher Joseph Smith
Joseph Smith Fletcher (7 February 1863 - 30 January 1935) was a British journalist and writer. He wrote about 200 books on a wide variety of subjects, both fiction and non-fiction. He was one of the leading writers of detective fiction in the "Golden Age". Fletcher was born in Halifax, West Yorkshire, son of a clergyman. He was educated at Silcoates School in Wakefield. After some study of law, he became a journalist. His first books published were poetry, and he then moved on to write numerous works of both historical fiction and history, many dealing with Yorkshire. He was made a fellow of the Royal Historical Society. In 1914 he wrote his first detective novel and went on to write over a hundred, latterly featuring private investigator, Ronald Camberwell.

The Talleyrand Maxim belongs to the pen of n outstanding British journalist and writer Joseph Smith Fletcher who was at the same time very prolific as he wrote more than 200 books some of which were fictional and the others were non-fictional. Among some of his other novels it is possible to name the following: Andrewlina (1889), The Winding Way (1890), The Wonderful City (1894), In the Days of Drake (1897), At the Blue Bell Inn (1898), The Fear of the Night (1903) and Paradise Court (1908).The Talleyrand Maxim is is a truly amazing novel that describes the life of the main characters, a wonderful story of their relationship with other people, their dreams, aspirations and love, faith and betrays. It is definitely recommended for a wide circle of readers who want to have a couple of hours of fascinating reading.

The writing is sometimes a bit difficult and pompous, but the plot is satisfyingly dense, the mystery is intriguing, and the atmosphere and characterization are excellent. ‘The Middle Temple Murder’ is a great story written in best traditions of the detective genre.
