The Iliad of Homer (1873)

Book cover
Supposedly written by a legendary ancient Greek epic poet Homer, though some scientists consider “Illiade” to be a collection of numerous separate myths and songs, which were passed on through different parts of Greek populated universe. So, heretofore only short verbal songs of the deeds of the heroes existed, in ballad form. Homer have chosen an episode of a long war and unfolded it in such a way to describe the entire heroic age. This episode is the “ire of Achill, the greatest character of the last generation of Greek heroes. The poem consists of cantos, each could be interpreted as an independent tale of one or another event of the heroes’ lives.
