The Case of Richard Meynell

Book cover
When an Anglican clergyman propounds liberal Christian views from the pulpit, he is tried for heresy - a 1911 novel from Mary Augusta Ward, an enormously successful British novelist who wrote under her married name as Mrs Humphry Ward. She wrote 25 novels, concerned largely with religious, political, and social issues. “The Case of Richard Meynell” appears something of a sequel to her third work Robert Elsmere, a runaway best-seller dealing with crises of faith. Elsmere appears as a ghost hallucinated by his widow, advising her to be more tolerant of the heretic Richard Meynell, who eventually marries the Elsmeres' daughter.
