Fowler Ellen Thorneycroft
Ellen Thorneycroft Fowler (9 April 1860 - 22 June 1929) was an English author. She was the daughter of Henry Hartley Fowler, 1st Viscount Wolverhampton and her sister Edith Henrietta Fowler was also a novelist. On 16 April 1903 Ellen married Alfred Felkin, a senior teacher at the Royal Naval School at Mottingham near Eltham.[1]

As he one Christmas-Eve his vigil kept, Whilst Nature 'neath her snowy mantle slept, He saw with wonder An angel standing smiling by his side, Whilst Heav'n to hosts seraphic opened wide Its gates of thunder. In silent awe the hermit bowed his head : " Fear not, my son," the angel sweetly said In accents ringing; " Our Christmas carol strive to learn by heart. She at once confided the discovery of this error, and her repentance of the same, to Paul, who, like a good husband (and unlike a good wife), carefully refrained from saying anything which, even by the freest translation, could be construed into " I told you so." He was for sending Fabia back to India by return of post, so to speak, having (again like a good husband) no sense of proportion where his wife and his wife's interests were concerned. The man who is alive to the laws of perspective with regard to the woman that he loves, had better take at once a self-imposed vow of celibacy: for while the world stands he will never make a passable husband. But Isabelwith that innate sense of justice in which it pleases men to imagine that all women are fundamentally lackingfelt that such a course of conduct would be most unfair to her guest: and put the temptation away from her accordingly. BAXENDALE HALL. Upon a hill the old house stood, Commanding stream and field and wood. Baxendale Hall, which was built for the third timehaving been twice destroyed by firein the reign of James the Second, was a fine, square house of red brick, with stone facings, and the coat-of-arms of the Baxendales, also in stone, carved over the front door. It stood in the centre of a beautiful park, on the borders of Mershire and Salopshire; and the house was situated upon such an eminence that its cellars were on a line with the top of the tower of Silverhampton Church. Thus Silverhamp- ton and Baxendale Hall looked at each other, from their respective hills, across a fruitful and well-populated valley, a pleasant land of meadows and orchards and comfortable houses, made fcippy by the money that was coined in the murky coal-fields on the other side of Silverhampton town. The Baxendales were one of the oldest families in Mershire; and they had lived at Baxendale Hall ever since Doomsday Book was editedand probably before that.
