16 Aug 2010 22:59:26 Now we will speak about politic and democracy. In publication one book that included Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy, chairman of the Senate JudiciaryCommittee, and great-grandson Christopher Coolidge Jeter, the late president's only direct descendant.
There was two candidates from democratic for the presidency — Sen. John Kerry, now chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and former Gov. Michael Dukakis of Massachusetts — have joined 19 other political figures in writing a laudatory book about a Republican who won.
Calvin Coolidge, the almost-forgotten 30th president, earned a reputation as an earnest, well-mannered but dull executive. He offended opponents as little as possible by not saying much. Though he pioneered the use of radio for political speechmaking and spoke often with reporters — on background — he was notably "SilentCal" at social occasions.
"Coolidge's belief in peace, accountability and integrity continues to be as important today as during his term," writes Kerry. "And whether Republican or Democrat, America needs a Calvin Coolidge today to restore our faith in the office of the Presidency and to politics more generally."
Dukakis echoes: "Nobody ever questioned Coolidge's integrity, including his political opponents. And it is why Coolidge not only matters today, but is relevant for the times."
Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell of Connecticut summarizes the book's theme in an opening essay.
"Calvin Coolidge did not speak ill of his opponents and try to raise up his prospects as a candidate by bringing his opponents down. ... Unfortunately these days, policies, ideas and platforms take a back seat to personal attacks and mudslinging."
Neither she nor the other authors go into detail on the bad manners they deplore. Nor do they describe the harsh tactics of some, like a fringe that has recently been displaying in Washington's public places large photos of President Barack Obama — with a small mustache painted in. It makes him look unmistakably like Adolf Hitler.
