Neilson William Allan
William Allan Neilson (1869 – 1946) was a Scottish-American educator, writer and lexicographer. He was president of Smith College between 1917 and 1939. He was born in Doune, Scotland. He taught at Bryn Mawr College from 1898 to 1900, Harvard from 1900 to 1904, Columbia from 1904 to 1906, and Harvard again from 1906 to 1917. He wrote on poetry and William Shakespeare and was the editor of Webster's New International Dictionary, Second Edition (1934).

THE RENAISSANCE By Professor Murray Anthony Potter HE Renaissance followed what is, even now, sometimes I called the Dark Ages. The almost inevitable inference is M that a period of darkness was succeeded by one of light. The veil of night rent asunder, the world, rejoicing in the sun's rays, with glad energy again took up its work. But much of the darkness of what are more fitly called the Middle Ages is due to the dimness of vision of those who have baptized the period with a forbidding name, and if we called the Renaissance an age of light, is it not because we are dazzled by mere glamour? After all, the Renaissance was the offspring of the Middle Ages, and a child must frequently bear the burdens of its parents. One of the burdens of the Middle Ages was obscurantism, and obscurantism is that which "prevents enlightenment, or hinders the progress of knowledge and wisdom." Instead of dying at the close of the Middle Ages, it lived through the Renaissance, wary and alert, its eyes ever fixed on those whom it regarded as enemies, falling upon them from ambush when because of age or weakness their courage flagged, and it triumphed in the sixteenth century. It can never die as long as there are men. Neither can superstition die, nor fear, nor inveterate evil passions, which, if they smolder for a time, will unfailingly burst forth and rage with greater fury. If such be your pleasure, you can, with some plausibility, represent the Renaissance as darker than the Middle Ages. Machiavelli,1 the Medicis, and the Borgias have long been regarded as sin incarnate in odious forms. Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III IMAGINATION AND ROMANTICISM The foregoing account of the manifestations of the imagination in poetry is of necessity fragmentary and inadequate, but it may serve to indicate with sufficient definiteness the senses in which the term will be used when we turn now to consider the validity of the proposition that in the predominance of this faculty lies the essence of Romanticism. No term in aesthetic criticism is so loosely used as Romanticism, none so variously defined. It has been employed to describe the unearth- liness of Blake and the earthliness of Crabbe, the democracy of Burns and the feudalism of Scott, the faith of Wordsworth and scepticism of Byron, the literalism of Thomson and the landscapes, flooded with " the light that never was on sea or land," that hover in the background of the spiritual visions of Shelley. The attempt to bring order and some unity of conception into this chaos requires no small degree of courage. Among the host of definitions that havebeen offered there are three that have been especially persistent. Heine, speaking of the Romantic School in Germany, finds the heart of the movement in the return to the Middle Ages. French critics have laid especial stress on the growth of the subjective element, and speak of the " rediscovery of the soul" and the "rebirth of the spiritual." In England, the favorite phrase has been the " return to Nature," with a special reference to the increased prominence, in the poetry of the time, of direct description of external beauty. All three aspects, and many others, are found in all three countries, sometimes in separate groups, sometimes in the work of one man. Robert Burns (1759-1796) (also known as Rabbie Burns, Scotland's favourite son, the Ploughman Poet, the Bard of Ayrshire and in Scotland as simply The Bard) was a poet and a lyricist. He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland, and is celebrated worldwide. He is the best-known of the poets who have written in the Scots language, although much of his writing is also in English and a 'light' Scots dialect, accessible to an audience beyond Scotland.
