First Test
Keladry of Mindelan is the youngest daughter of a baron whose only note is forging an alliance between Tortall and the Yamani Islands. She, however, is about to become notable in her own right–she is the first girl to try for knighthood in Tortall since Alanna the Lioness broke all the rules nearly twenty years before. Her first year of probation as a page at the palace is rife with difficulties–her training master seems to be an unfair, inflexible sexist, institutionalized bullying is the norm, and her Yamani customs, stemming from being raised in the Islands, coupled with her femaleness make her the target of practical jokes and ill-natured teasing.
