If I stay in Rome today, my feet will carry me back there in spite of me. I shall again be subjugated by the exaltation which laid hold of me yesterday and made me despise everything not Caesarean, and I shall spend there every one of the few days that must be so divided that I shall see something of all Rome. It would be wise to put a broad piece of the Campagna between me and the Forum. I must go up in themountains, and breathe the spring air, perfumed with recent life. The shady places, the running waters, the attractive villas of Frascati will help me, by their familiar association with the everyday life of a most recent past, to come back to the present century.
