Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. Let us carry back our thoughts to one particular day in the history of the Jewish people. On the tenth day of the Jewish month Tishri, in the autumn of the year preceding the death of our Lord, the people of Jerusalem were gathered together, fasting, at the Temple, to witness the most solemn act of their religion. Caiaphas the high-priest ministering alone, having washed himself, arrayed himself in white linen garments, instead of the splendid vestments ofhis office, and went up to make atonement for the people's sins. A bullock and two goats were provided as offerings. He slew the bullock and one of the goats, the bullock for his own sins, and the goat for those of the people, 'then he entered into the most holy place of the Temple, within which, except on this day, he never might set his foot, first with incense, then a second time with the blood of the bullock and of the goat. And he sprinkled the blood of the victims on the lid of the ark of the covenant, and he sprinkled it also seven times on the floor of the most holy place before the ark. Then he came forth into the court of the Temple and laid his hands upon the remaining goat, in token that he laid upon its head the sins of all the people.
