A professor of theology Benjamin Breckinridge Warfield (1851 –1921) in his book “Counterfeit Miracles” inquires into the church history and various examples of miracles. The author, upheld by examples of the Christian-like miracles being performed through mesmerism, placebo effect, suggestion, and non-Christian religions, rejects of the supernatural work in all these cases. The book caused much criticism and praise, raised heated debate, but many agree that criticism of religion on theological, philosophical and especially historical grounds is of the utmost importance in the search of truth.
