Proxy
Knox is forced to "learn from his mistakes" by watching Syd take these punishments. He doesn't like witnessing the pain and degradation inflicted on Syd, but he's never altered his steps to avoid it either. This proxy system is just an ugly fact in his life. A life that is rather slick on the surface but almost as ugly as Syd's on the underbelly.
