Book cover
Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl is an outstanding book which can be considered as a bright example of a feminist literature that describes the life of a slave girl. The novel was published in 1861 by Harriet Ann Jacobs who was a slave herself and wanted to express her painful life experience and share it with other people. It was not easy for her to write this book and publish it but she did a great job possessing a good sense of the language. Harriet describes in details the tortures and all punishment that she had to go through. She believes that being a slave is terrible on default but being a slave woman is more terrible than being a slave man. She grew up a a slave and had to suffer from pursuing of her master. Later she became a lover of an unmarried children and bore several children but still officially she belonged to her master who did not want to sell her. Finally in 1850 she escaped from slavery and was trying to hide somewhere but even in northern states she could not feel safe and free. Her feelings are the basis of the book where she describes not only the tragedy of one person but the tragedy of whole families who were broken apart. The book is very touching and makes its readers think about the rights of people and their freedom.
