Anna St. Ives

Book cover
Thomas Holcroft was an 18th century English playwright. Holcroft worked as a stable boy and was self taught. After marrying he became a teacher in a small school. He then became a prompter in the Dublin Theater and did a little acting. Anna St. Ives was the first British Jacobin novel, published in 1792. Anna is the respectable daughter of a baronet. She loves Frank the son of her father's steward. Anna feels she cannot love this man because her peers would not understand her loving him. They would see her love as merely passion and she would loose her influence. Frank argues that since their love comes from a rational attachment it would be good for society if they joined.
