A Happy Boy

Book cover
This is 1860 novel by a Norwegian writer and poet, Bjørnstjerne Martinius Bjørnson. Close by their style to the Norwegian folklore and legends, Bjørnson’s early works, “A Happy Boy,” “Synnøve Solbakken,” or “Arne”, paint a vivid picture of peasant life of those times. The author tried to glorify villagers’ life and demonstrate, that with all their stoicism and love for the adventure they appear the spiritual heirs of the heroes he described on the pages of his books, people who struggled for conciliation of the paganism and Christianity.
