Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker–his classmate and crush–who committed suicide two weeks earlier.

On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he'll find out how he made the list.

...did? Or what if the opposite happened and I thought we could become friends but she didn't?So many things could have gone so horribly wrong. I press my forehead against the smooth bark and try to calm my breathing. But the other girl was Jessica Davis, and she didn't want to be there any more than I did. I had wanted to read this book for awhile now, but it was never in the library when I went to check it out. My best friend actually had it before I did, and she told me it was simply amazing. So, like the nerd I am, I borrow the book. It didn't take me long to read it at all, it drags you in and as soon as I put it down I wanted to pick it back up. This book is unbelievable and sometimes sad, but worth a read.

The clerk takes the package. The same shoebox that sat on my porch less than twenty-four hours ago; rewrapped in a brown paper bag, sealed with clear packing tape, exactly as I had received it. But now addressed with a new name. The next name on Hannah Baker's list. "Baker's dozen, " I mumble.
