The Memory of Running

Book cover
The Memory of Running is a refreshingly different book about an American anti-hero. Smithson Ide – apologetically fat, drunk, cigarette-smoking loser. He’s never had a girlfriend. He’s never moved out of the apartment he hates. He’s never left his first job in a toy factory. Once upon a time he was a bright, lovable, fit teenager, and at first his degradation and cowardice is quite repellent. Gradually however, we are softened by pity as we learn more of his past: his tight-knit family rent by long years of crisis and grief; living with, loving, and losing a sibling with mental problems.
