The book from Samuel Wilderspin, an English educationist known for his pioneering work on infant schools. His work provided the model for infant schools in Europe and North America. Wilderspin’s system was aimed to develop the infant mind and moral character - intellectual and moral powers of children from one to seven years old. The author says in the Preface: Upwards of twenty-five thousand children have been now under my own care, in various parts of the United Kingdom, whose age has not exceeded six years; myself, my daughters, and my agents, have organized many score of schools, and thus I have had opportunities of studying the infant mind and heart, such as none of my contemporaries have ever possessed.

...defiance. The following cases afford further proof of the same lamentable truth;the first is extracted from a morning paper of the 20th of September, 1824. "A little boy, not more than _six years of age_, was broughtbefore the Lord Mayor at the Mansion House, on Saturday, the 18thinstant, having been found in a warehouse, where he had secretedhimself for the purpose of thieving. At a late hour on Friday night, a watchman was going his round, when, on trying a warehouse in whichthere was much valuable property, to see whether it was safe, he heardthe little prisoner cry. The persons who had the care of the warehousewere roused, and he was taken out. In his fright he acknowledged thata man had taken him from his mother, and induced him, upon a promiseof reward, to steal into the warehouse; upon a concerted signal, hewas to act as directed by the fellow on the outside; but becomingterrified at being confined so long in the dark, he had cried outand discovered himself.
