...He watched her as she nervously crossed the bare wooden floor. The cottage was typical of the weather-beaten houses that dotted the hills overlooking the ocean. Sparsely furnished with old throw rugs, overstuffed and somewhat tattered furniture, it had, nevertheless, a surprisingly pleasant atmosphere of crumbling comfort, especially with the fire blazing in the fireplace. "I'll get you a brandy. It's damn cold out there, and you aren't wearing anything other than a thin sweater. " Emelina said nothing. She could hardly explain that she'd been concerned with freedom of movement and hadn't wanted to be dragged down by a heavy jacket in case it was necessary to run or hide. She kept her narrowed, wary gaze on me fire as Julian moved about the small kitchen, pouring brandy. She was aware of his cool assessment.
