Evidences For The Coming Of The Lord In 1873 Or The Midnight Cry

Book cover
"Evidences For the Coming of the Lord in 1873, Or the Midnight Cry," by Nelson H. Barbour (1871). Barbour, a Second Adventist, wrote this to explain his predictions for Christ's visible return in 1873. When the prediction failed, Barbour adjusted the date to 1874. After the failure of the 1874 prediction, Barbour's group decided that Christ had returned in October of 1874, but invisibly. Barbour was joined by Charles Taze Russell in 1876, who became a major supporter. In 1879, Barbour and Russell broke fellowship and Russell began publishing Zion's Watch Tower and Herald of Christ's Presence in July of 1879. The magazine is known today as The Watchtower and is now distributed by Jehovah's Witnesses.
