The novel of Edith Wharton, a Pulitzer Prize-winning American author, takes place in New York, 1916. It is a story of two sisters, Ann Eliza and Evelina Bunner, who are quite happy to run a “very small shop, in a shabby basement, in a sidestreet already doomed to decline”; a story of the destruction of their regular quiet life. They are to face the real world outside of the little shop. Not without air of mystery, it is a wonderful read on the socio-economic hard times and people relationships.
